Obituary – Betty Hulquist Sherritt

Betty Hulquist Sherritt passed peacefully in her beloved home of 57 years in Boulder, Colorado, on Friday, August 12, 2022. She was 92 years old.
Betty was born on February 9, 1930, in Elgin, Illinois, to her parents, Emma Ulsaker Hulquist, and Chauncey Irving Hulquist. She was the youngest of their two children, both daughters. Her older sister was Jewel Hulquist (Varwig), born in 1922. Her family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado in 1935, when Betty was five years old. Betty lived in Fort Collins for the next twenty years, graduating from Fort Collins High School at the age of 16. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Colorado State University in Fort Collins (with a focus on Home Economics) in 1951. Betty married George Moore Sherritt on September 7, 1949. They moved to Dallas, Texas for eight years, returning to Colorado in 1964.
The family settled in Boulder, Colorado, where, at the age of 34, Betty designed and built her own house, on the mountainside just below the Enchanted Mesa, near Chautauqua Park. The house had stunning views of the Flatirons, as well as of the city of Boulder below. Betty had the blueprints for the house she designed drawn up by an architectural student at CU, and then oversaw the construction. She completed some of the finishing herself (cabinets, wall coverings, etc.), and created and upholstered much of the furniture for her new home.
Hospitality was one of Betty’s special gifts. She hosted family and extended family, friends, international students from CU Boulder, musicians, and World Affairs Conference speakers in her beautiful home. She had many close friends throughout her life: neighbors, tennis, bridge, and hiking group friends, sorority sisters (Kappa Alpha Theta), international students, and others.
Betty was physically active and athletic, played tennis and hiked, and adored the outdoors and the Colorado mountains. She loved to attend plays, concerts, and musicals, and took full advantage of the offerings available in Boulder as a university town. She was interested in science and astronomy, had a telescope for viewing the night skies, and kept a microscope in her kitchen cupboard. She was musical, played the piano, liked to sing harmony, and could whistle brilliantly.
Betty was an avid seamstress, who always had her sewing projects laid out and her sewing machine humming. She made many of her own clothes, as well as those of her daughter and her mother. She was skilled at flat pattern design and tailoring, as well as other needlecrafts.
Betty and George toured the world together. They traveled throughout the US and Canada, first in a camping trailer, and later in self-outfitted camping vans. They also traveled abroad extensively, including a trip around the world in 2007.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Kendra Sherritt Bartley, and her two sons, Jay Sherritt and Lon Sherritt, as well as nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Betty’s sparkling personality, courage, creativity, and hospitality will always be remembered by those whose lives she touched.
