Obituary for Elizabeth Jancosek

Elizabeth G. Jancosek

November 24, 1933 – October 8, 2022

It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Dr. Elizabeth “Betty” Jancosek, age 88, of Boulder, CO., who passed away on October 8, 2022, peacefully in her daughter’s home surrounded by her family. Betty was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and cousin. She was also a dedicated educator. She loved all these roles, and she performed them every day with the utmost kindness, generosity, humility and grace.

Betty was born in Point Pleasant, West Virginia to Alexander and Virginia Gravely and was the oldest of 3 children. She moved to Ohio to attend THE Ohio State University where she met her husband Jan. They married in 1957 and had 3 children. She earned her doctorate degree from Ohio State in 1976 and taught at OSU for several years before moving to Boulder, Colorado in 1979. Betty was a professor at the University of Colorado in the Speech, Language, Hearing Science department and had a genuine passion for teaching and mentoring her students.

She was an amazing mother and grandmother which was likely her favorite role. She was very involved with grandkids’ activities and loved spending time with family and friends. Betty was an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan and loved watching OSU football but also truly enjoyed watching the CU Women’s Basketball team. Betty and Jan traveled extensively and had the opportunity to experience some amazing trips across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. Betty volunteered many hours at her church Sacred Heart of Jesus in Boulder, served as a lector, Eucharistic minister, catechist, and various other volunteer activities.

Betty is survived by her daughter, Maria Arellano (Roger) of Erie, CO, her son Anthony Jancosek, of Firestone, CO, her brother Lewis Gravely (Marsha) of Sarasota, FL. and her cousin MaryAnn Purdue (Tony) of Pomeroy, OH., along with her grandchildren- Alysha Patterson (James), Rose Brough (Casey), and Alexander Arellano (Rachel), Thomas Jancosek, and Danielle Jancosek and 9 great-grandchildren. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Jan in 2015, her son, Jan in 2014, and brother Sandy Gravely in 2000.
